Australia’s Most Popular Pizza Toppings, Ranked

Would you like to know the most popular pizza toppings in Australia?

Although pizza originated in Italy, it has crossed time and space (and geographical boundaries!) to become one of the most popular cuisines in the world. And here down under, pizza reigns as the favourite takeaway option nationwide. In 2017 alone, we Aussies ate more than 4 million pizzas! Just what exactly are people ordering? What are the leading pizza toppings in the country? Let’s find out.

1. Cheese topping

What type of pizza is most popular in Australia? It turns out that Margarita pizza, with its fresh tomato, kalamata olives, oregano, and mozzarella cheese topping far outranked all other pizzas to take the crown as Australia’s most popular pie. Created in 1899 and widely considered to be the original pizza, this tried-and-tested humble pizza continues to dominate as Australia’s pizza of choice.

2. Pineapple and bacon topping

The second most-favoured pizza is the pineapple-and-ham laden Hawaiian pizza. Pizza connoisseurs have been debating for years whether the tangy fruit deserves to be used as a topping. Regardless of this heated argument, what’s clear is that we Aussies love our Hawaiian pizza, because hey, who doesn’t love a double smoked leg ham on pizza right?

3. Pepperoni

The perfectly charred pepperoni came in at a respectable third place. It is hard to beat our Pepperoni Burst pizza, with its stringy mozzarella cheese and crispy meat, all stacked on a tomato sauce base. Pepperoni is American cured salami that found its way onto pizza and has been a hit topping ever since.

4. Six Meats aka “Meat lovers”

Meat lovers pizza is completely different from the original Italian pizza which was totally vegetarian, that is garlic, cheese and basil, with no sauce. Our famous Six Meats pizza features slow-cooked tender beef, smoked leg ham, pepperoni, chicken breast, smoked chorizo, sujuk beef sausage all topped with mozzarella and all loaded on either a BBQ or tomato sauce base. This dish is popular for a reason – it’s pizza with all the meat you can eat!

5. BBQ chicken

The idea of having BBQ chicken pizza was a strange one back in 1985 when it first came out. However, today this is not the case. BBQ chicken breast, white onion, mozzarella, button mushrooms topped with BBQ sauce and shallots on a light tomato base all make for a classic Manoosh BBQ chicken pizza.

6. Super Supreme

As the name suggests, supreme is a type of pizza loaded with all of life’s good things: pepperoni, smoked leg ham, smoked chorizo, mushroom, white onion, kalamata olives, capsicum, pineapple, all topped with mozzarella, oregano and garlic olive oil. Nothing says pizza quite like this supreme and delicious Manoosh dish.

5 Creative Pita Bread Recipes

Pita bread is the ultimate versatile food. You can stuff the pockets with pretty much anything and make yourself a delicious doughy snack.

If you’re tired of dipping pita bread into hummus and are on the hunt for some creative recipes, look no further. Here are 5 creative pita bread recipes:

Lebanese Pita Bread

Turn your pita bread into a Lebanese-inspired dish by stuffing the pocket with a mixture of traditional ingredients: grilled halloumi cheese, tomato sauce, minced lamb, za’atar, white onion and chilli flakes. Toss with za’atar and add yoghurt and you have yourself a 5-star Lebanese-inspired dish. After all, pita bread history dates back 4,000 years ago in the Middle East, so it’s only right.

Pita Bread Pizza

What is pita bread if not super doughy like a pizza? So, how to make pita bread pizza?

The pita bread pizza recipe is simple. Spread your pita bread with tomato puree and top with cheese (cheddar, parmesan, mozzarella – or all three) and herbs. Pop it in the oven until it’s crispy and the cheese has melted, and serve!

The great thing about pita bread pizza is that it is small in size and perfect for snacking.

Breakfast Pita Bread
If you were wondering “is pita bread healthy?” it’s completely down to what you put in it. Avocado and scrambled eggs are great fillers that are healthy but don’t compromise on flavour.

Mediterranean Pita Bread
Give your pita bread a Mediterranean makeover by adding staple Mediterranean ingredients. Toss together a salad of greens (lettuce, cucumbers, capsicum, tomatoes, carrots and garlic) and add chickpeas, feta, parsley and mint. Pop the salad into the pita pockets, and voila!

Leftover Pita Bread
You can fill pita bread with almost anything, so why not pile your leftovers into the pockets and have it for lunch the next day?

Add in whatever you had for dinner: meatballs, kidney beans and rice, stir-fry, etc. Anything goes! You can even grill your stuffed pitas to ensure the food melts well together, and to give your bread that crispy outer edge.

Lebanese food is absolutely delicious, and if you haven’t tried it yet, you are missing out. Here are 6 traditional Lebanese dishes from our menu that you need to try.

Sambousik

Sambousik is a small pastry filled with either meat and/or cheese. In Lebanon, lamb is a traditional choice, and cheeses can range from haloumi to feta. Onions, herbs and spices add more flavour while pine nuts impart a deliciously nutty texture and taste. These popular pastries can be either baked or fried and you’ll often find them on a classic Lebanese mezze spread.

Sujuk Pizza

Sujuk is spiced Lebanese sausage that is somewhat similar to salami, with its three main characteristics being that it is salty, dry and has a high fat content. It is traditionally made using ground beef (though mutton and pork are also used) combined with spices such as garlic, salt, cumin, sumac and red pepper before being piped into a sausage casing.

Our folded sujuk pizza is packed with cheese, sujuk, olives, capsicum and tomato. Yum.

Shawarma

Shawarma is the Lebanese variant of a Turkish kebab or Greek gyros. It is made from marinated meat that has been slow roasted on a vertical spit for many hours. Once cooked, the meat is carved off in thin, wide strips and stuffed inside a flatbread along with a variety of vegetables, such as lettuce, cucumber, tomatoes, onion, pickles and parsley. Condiments can range from garlic yoghurt to hummus to chilli.

Our shawarma is filled with juicy beef fillets, lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles & parsley topped with our garlic yoghurt sauce.

Lahembajin

Lahembajin is made from flat bread topped with a mixture of ground meat, vegetables and herbs and baked in a wood fired oven.

The meat is commonly lamb or beef, the vegetables are usually onion, capsicum and tomato, and herbs can include parsley, mint and coriander. Just add a squirt of lemon, fold it up, and you have one mouth watering snack.

Kebbeh

Kebbeh is another Lebanese classic you will usually find as a part of a mezze spread. It is made from finely ground meat, onion, herbs and spices, combined with burghul (cracked wheat) and rolled into balls then deep fried to golden perfection.

There are even vegetarian versions of kebbeh made with hearty vegetables that hold their shape, such as potato or pumpkin, replacing the meat. Served with fresh hommus or a yoghurt sauce with garlic and mint, they are a delicious snack.

Za’atar Flatbread

Manoosh have some of the best za’atar bread in Sydney! This traditional dish, known as man’oushe or Lebanese pizza, is simple but delicious, featuring baked flatbread topped with olive oil and zaa’tar – a tangy mixture of herbs and spices, namely ground thyme, sesame seeds and sumac.

If you’re on the hunt for authentic Lebanese dishes in Sydney then look no further than Manoosh. Stop by Manoosh or order online – we guarantee you will be glad that you did. Or if you’re after top quality mobile pizza catering, give us a call.
