Finally There’s An App That Lets You Add Pizza To All Your Photos

Have you ever looked at a photo of yourself and thought “this would look 10 times better if there was a slice of pizza in it?”

Well, Alicia Lu has, and it was a thought that led her on a wild journey towards making her own app: Pizzafy.

Pizzafy

Check out Pizzafy, the app that lets you add realistic slices of pizza to any of your photos, however you like. Because everyone needs more pizza in their life.

The story goes like this.

One day, the 33 year-old amateur chef and food blogger decided she wanted to send her friends a picture of herself being rained on by pizza slices along with a caption saying, “Weekend forecast says 90% chance of pizza,” something she thought would involved no more than a click of a button. But Lu was shocked to find nothing in her app store that could do what she wanted.

“I figured if there was technology that could turn you into an anime deer or swap your face with someone else’s, surely there was an app that would allow you to insert photorealistic pizzas into photos,” Lu said in an expose by Forbes.

However, she wasn’t dismayed. Rather than waiting for someone else to take charge, Lu herself met up with a developer, Daniel Williams, through a mutual friend and pitched him the idea: an app that would let you incorporate pizza into your photos however you like. “A pizza fan himself, he was down, and we got started,” she said.

Together with William, Lu created Pizzafy from the ground up, taking her own photos of pizza slices from her local pizza place, Gino’s in Brooklyn, which she says makes “classic, quintessential pizzas”, as well as researching the ins and outs of starting a business and intellectual property laws.

Pizzafy is now avaliable on the app store for free and everyone should own it.

“I have never met anyone in my life who didn’t like pizza,” Lu says. “More than any other food, pizza is a cultural icon. It’s the one food that defines the current zeitgeist. It’s universally loved.”

We have to agree.

Check out the app on the app store and Pizzafy your life.

What exactly is vegan cheese and how does it taste so good? Let’s take a look at this delicious vegan alternative to dairy.

For vegetarians and vegans, options range from delicious salads, delectable dips, tasty wraps, and of course, our famous pizzas.

How so? Two words: vegan cheese.

We source our vegan cheese from Daiya, a renowned dairy-free food producer who has been making delicious vegan-friendly products since 2009. Their cheese is so gooey and delicious, most people can’t even tell the difference from the real thing. But how do they do it? What exactly is vegan cheese and how does it taste so good? Let’s have a look.

What Is In Vegan Cheese?

Rather than using animal derivatives, vegan cheese is made from naturally derived products such as nut milk, soy protein, vegetable oil, yeast, agar flakes, natural enzymes, vegetable glycerin and assorted bacterial cultures.

We use mozzarella-style vegan cheese on our pizzas, which is made from filtered water, tapioca flour, expeller pressed non-GMO canola and/or safflower oil, coconut oil, pea protein, salt, vegan natural flavours, inactive yeast, vegetable glycerin, xanthan gum, citric acid and titanium dioxide (a naturally occurring mineral). It melts wonderfully at high temperatures and is so gooey and delicious you’ll be hard pressed to tell to difference!

How Is It Made?

Cheese is essentially made from a coagulation of proteins. In ‘real’ cheese, these proteins – called casein – are derived from the animal milk the cheese is made from. Rennet – a group of enzymes that are produced in the stomachs of animals – is what coagulates the proteins and is added during production. This is what causes curdling and eventually makes the cheese.

But what about vegan cheese? To be entirely free from animal products, it can not contain any rennet. So how do the producers make it coagulate? Well, being entirely plant-based, protein masses from various plant sources are used in lieu of animal proteins. Oils, emulsifiers, and thickeners are also used to ensure a firm texture.

You don’t have to be a meat eater to enjoy eating at OOSHMAN, we firmly believe we offer the best vegan food Sydney has to offer and we love searching for new ways to cater for our vegan friends. If you’re feeling hungry – vegan or not – drop by OOSHMAN (formerly known as Manoosh). Or if you’re after top quality mobile pizza catering, give us a call.

The Importance of Burghal in Lebanese Cooking

Burghul holds a dear place in the culinary history of Lebanon. Also known as bulgar wheat, burghul is a cereal made from the grains of a variety of different wheat species. It was once a central element of the Lebanese diet, but has since fallen into obscurity in favour of rice and other grains.

That being said, it is still commonly used today – although you might not know it. It is often mistaken that tabbouleh is traditionally made with cous cous, but in fact, the traditional way of preparing the dish uses burghul for its carbohydrate element. Or if you’ve ever enjoyed crunchy, golden kibbeh, then you’ve eaten burghul.

burghul

Burghul is an incredible little grain. With tonnes of flavour and more than a few health benefits, it’s been a staple in Lebanese cooking for centuries.

How Is It Made?

Burghul is a Persian word that means ‘bruised grain’. Although similar, it should not be confused with cracked wheat, which is not pre-cooked. The preparation of burghul takes places in three stages. First, it is carefully steamed or boiled until its outer layer starts to crack. It is then taken out to dry – traditionally in the sun on the rooftops of Lebanese villages. Once it has dried, it is then ground down or ‘cracked’, separating the bran from the grain. What is left is a grain of varying sizes: coarse burghul, fine burghul and powdered burghul, each which have their different uses in Lebanese dishes.

Burghul Is Better For Your Health

Burghul has a number of health benefits that make it an excellent alternative to other grains. As a whole wheat, it is largely unprocessed, meaning it retains its rich nutrients and vitamins. It is also very low in fat, high in dietary fiber, rich in minerals and a great source of plant-based protein.

Good For Your Heart

Whole grains like bulghur are excellent for heart health as they contain rich anti-oxidants, trace minerals and phenolic compounds that are linked to the prevention of cardiovascular disease. The fiber in whole grains also has wonderful anti-inflammatory effects and can help lower cholesterol.

Good For Your Gut

Fiber is also great for digestion as it helps maintain regular bowel movements and detox the body of toxins.

Helps Slow Down Sugar Absorption

Bulghur wheat is very low GI, meaning it slows the rate that carbohydrates are digested and that sugar is released into the bloodstream.

Helps Keep You Feeling Full

The fiber in bulgur is not absorbable in the body, meaning that it travels through the digestive tract, taking up a large amount of space while absorbing water, meanwhile making you feel full.

A Great Source of Vitamins and Minerals

Bulghur is rich in essential vitamins and minerals such as iron, manganese, magnesium and B vitamins niacin and thiamine.

Uses in Lebanese Cooking

Bulghur is the star of two classic Lebanese dishes. Perhaps the most well-known is tabbouleh, where it is used to bolster the combination of parsley, tomato and onion. Bulgur imparts a soft, chewy texture, with a mild flavour that is slightly nutty. To prepare bulgur for use in tabbouleh, all you need to do is submerge it in boiling water for a few minutes until it is soft and light, then toss it through the other ingredients.

The second dish that really heroes bulghur is kibbeh: a Levantine dish made of bulgur, minced onions, and finely ground lean beef, lamb or goat mixed with vibrant spices. For a vegetarian alternative, kbbeh can be made with pumpkin in place of meat. The bulgur cases the filling, which is then deep fried to crispy perfection.

You will also find coarse burghul used as the central element in Middle Eastern pilaf, mixed through vegetables for a more substantial dish, or simply as delicious side as you would couscous or rice.

Delicious.

Here at OOSHMAN, we love burghul! We use it in our tasty tabbouleh, and both our meat and vegetable kibbeh.

Man Vows To Break World Record With a 2km-Long Pizza

A man has vowed to break the record for the world’s longest pizza with a 2km beast, cooked in a 32-foot pizza oven.

longest pizza

A man has vowed to break the record for the world’s longest pizza with a 2km beast, cooked in a 32-foot pizza oven.

Fash Asvadi is a LA-based pizza oven importer and seller (who else would have access to a 32 foot-long oven?) who is determined to become the first American to break the record for the world’s longest pizza.

The record is currently sitting at 1,853.88m and was achieved by Napoli Pizza Village in Naples, Italy, in May last year.

“As far as I know, this is the first attempt ever for this record in the US,” Asvadi told Munchies. “Making 1.3 miles of pizza is not something that just anybody can pull off.”

He plans to cook the pizza in a makeshift oven he has built himself:

“We’ve built a special 32-foot long trailer that has several ovens attached to it—it looks like a locomotive—and it’s going to go over the 1.3 miles of scaffolding that the pizza will be on top of. The assembly team will arrive around 2am along with truckloads of the dough, sauce, and cheese.

We have a dough team that will start assembling the crust and while that happens, the ovens will begin to move like a train over the dough and cook the base from one side to the other.”

Asvadi also told Munchies that prep has been going on for over six months.

“We want to extend the record by 1,000 feet. Really, the most difficult part about all this has been finding a suitable site, because you obviously can’t have the pizza taking sharp bends. Finally, we found a racetrack that has a two-mile track without sharp bends, so we can pull off what we need to there.”

The dough for the pizza weighs whopping 8000 pounds, with over 9000 pounds of sauce and cheese topping it off.

The project’s website says that, “Attempting records is an inherent part of anyone’s spiritual journey; something that unites. Something that brings out the very best in everyone. A reason to celebrate humanity and friendship.”

We reckon the same can be said for making pizza in just about any scenario.

While we might not be this crazy at OOSHMAN (formerly known as Manoosh) , we are intent on serving the best pizza in Sydney. Simply order from us online or drop by and see us in person – we guarantee you will not be disappointed.

Fresh and Vibrant Herbs In Lebanese Cooking

Lebanese cooking wouldn’t be quite the same without its utilisation of a wide array of vibrant herbs and spices. Where the latter impart the vivacious, earthy flavours that Lebanese cuisine is known for, its the herbs that make certain dishes really sing. Used deliciously in meats, salads and dips, Lebanese herbs like wild thyme and parsley are the stars of many of our most treasured cuisine.

Lebanese Herbs

From the subtle freshness of spearmint to the vibrant earthiness of za’atar, Lebanese food would not be the same without its liberal use of fresh herbs.

Za’atar

Few words will evoke more pride and nostalgia in a Lebanese person than za’atar. Fresh, vibrant and aromatic, za’atar is a delicious mixture of wild thyme, oregano, marjoram and lightly toasted sesame seeds.

The result is a versatile herb amalgam, used in a range of Lebanese dishes; you’ll find it mixed with olive oil and spread on bread for traditional manoushe; you’ll find it sprinkled on meats of all kind, or peppered upon Lebanese dips like hommus or labhne; you’ll even find it incorporated into falafel for a truly authentic flavour experience.

herbs

Parsley

Parsley is an unassuming little herb that packs a huge punch. It is the central element of tabbouleh – one of Lebanon’s most renowned dishes – in which it is carefully chopped (so it doesn’t bruise) and mixed with burghal, tomato, onion, lemon juice and oil.

There are two main variations of parsley: curly and flat. The latter contains more flavour and aroma, especially when the stalks are chopped among the leaves. Parsley is also an excellent garnish for meats, salads and dips. Just chop a few leaves and sprinkle it on your next Lebanese dish – you won’t be disappointed.

what is shawarma

Mint

Mint is an important element in many Lebanese dishes, though it features far more subtly than parsley or za’atar. It can be used in small quantities in dips and salads like tabbouleh, fattoush and cucumber yoghurt.

Whole mint leaves are also an excellent addition to manoushe or shawarma wraps, offering a burst of freshness to balance the earthy, meaty flavours. There are numerous mint variations; spearmint is the preferred choice in Lebanese cooking as it is firm and less bitter than other types.

herbs

Oregano

Oregano is a versatile herb with a robust flavour and warm aroma that makes it a brilliant addition to savoury dishes. Alongside wild thyme, it is the most crucial ingredient in za’atar. You’ll find dried oregano sprinkled generously on chargrilled meats and fish, as well as vegetables like tomato and eggplant.

Next time your pizza is lacking a bit of kick, try adding a liberal pinch of oregano – it plays well with just about anything.

herbs

Rosemary

Much like oregano, rosemary is the perfect companion for a number of savoury dishes – particularly those that are grilled over hot coals or baked in a wood fire oven. Rosemary is an excellent garnish for roasted meats like lamb – which is a favourite in Lebanese cuisine – or chicken. It is also pairs well with garlic and oil, especially when spread on fresh bread and baked in the oven. Yum.

Traditional Lebanese food is one of the world’s tastiest and healthiest cuisines, thanks to its generous use of fresh herbs. Apple Have Patented a Design For Their Very Own Pizza Box

Apple have actually patented a design for their very own pizza box, which will supposedly keep pizza from going soggy.

Apple pizza box

Apple have patented a design for their very own pizza box that will supposedly keep pizza from going soggy.

Recently, Wired were allowed an inside look at the new Apple HQ. It was there they uncovered a new innovation – a pizza box that lets air and moisture escape, meaning it won’t be reabsorbed by the pizza, making it soggy.

Francesco Longoni, Apple’s Head of Food Services helped the tech giants develop the box. The patent describes a “container [that] is singularly constructed from a single piece of material” making it easy to stack for efficient storage.

The base will feature “gap[s] assisting in thermally isolating the food item and allowing moisture expelled from the food item to be transported away from the food item” to work in conjunction with a “moisture channeling feature integrally formed in the lid”, amongst other ‘innovative’ designs.

In true Apple fashion, the patent even describes various modifications which may be implemented, such as portions of the interior base that can be elevated to provide a “support platform” in order to prevent moisture from being trapped underneath.

Another modification suggests “The container can also include openings in the lid that allow steam to escape from the pizza. Allowing such steam to escape from within the container further ensuring that the pizza does not become soggy through the re-absorption of moisture.”

You can read the entire patent here, but be warned, it’s a long one.

See some of the designs below.
